Comfort With Discomfort
Uneasiness doesn’t have to feel bad.
Let’s be honest-at some point in our lives we have all experienced thoughts, comments or requests that are contrary to our belief system. In those situations how we react with fight or flight. But what if we paused and considered? To do so, would require that we “get comfortable with being uncomfortable” yet most of us steer clear of anything that makes us uncomfortable.
For example, maybe you or a family member had a bad experience with someone from a particular race. Does that experience cloud your vision when coming across other people of the same race? What story do you tell yourself when you encounter these differences? Chances are these questions may make you feel uneasy and that we encourage. You see, only in that space of “getting comfortable with being uncomfortable,” and being honest with yourself can any impactful personal change be made.
As James Baldwin says, “Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.”
