Chinese New Year/Black History Month
Chinese New Year, Lunar New Year or Spring Festival is the festival that celebrates the beginning of a new year on the traditional lunisolar Chinese calendar. Lunar New Year officially begins on February 1st, 2022, and ends on February 11th. 2022 is the Year of the Tiger. In Chinese and other East Asian cultures, Chinese New Year is one of the most important holidays as it is a time to reflect on the past year and good fortune in the future.
Happy New Year or Xin Nian Kuai Le-pronounced “sheen neean kwai luh” or San Nin Fai Lok pronounced “san knee fy lock”
February 1 marks the start of Black History Month, an annual tradition and time to celebrate the impact and pivotal role Black Americans play and highlights their scientific, educational, and cultural accomplishments throughout U.S. history. Black History Month started as a week in 1926 by author, journalist, and historian Carter G. Woodson. He believed deeply that racial equality was only possible with the acknowledgement and understanding that the teaching of Black history is fundamental within broader society. His mission remains as relevant in 2022 as it did in 1926.
“If a race has no history, if it has no worthwhile tradition, it becomes a negligible factor in the thought of the world, and it stands in danger of being exterminated.” Carter G. Woodson
