We Have Lost The Meaning Of Diversity

What does diversity mean to you?

The word diversity has increasingly become a catch all phrase for leaders who want a far too easy way out of making hard business decisions. Ironically, for a word that is rooted in the notion of “variety”, many constructs now associated with diversity are limited to a few limiting social identities, increasingly focused around race and gender. As we move to more polarization around diversity, what gets lost in the workplace is the real notion of diversity – what experiences, perspectives and ideas are around the table. Unfortunately for all of us, those ideas of diversity are, too, lost in the shuffle as we continue to restrict our own definition of such an important word.
